Summary

Topics we'll cover include an introduction to green technology, new or renovated buildings, practical strategies for libraries, green IT, and alternative energies.

This conference was originally presented on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 in the Amigos online classroom. It is now available for those that couldn't register for the live presentations.

Each session is approximately 45 minutes in length. Both handouts and recordings will be available to you for three months. For a listing of sessions, their summaries, and speakers, start with the Schedule tab.

Your LEED accredited professional librarians, Mary Carr and Steve Carr, will provide an overview of the green movement. How did we get to the place where we're having an online conference about the topic? They will provide a conceptual overview of the sustainability effort and what's involved, as well as some terminology you'll be hearing throughout the day. What's the real point of being green? You'll find out! Join them for this introduction to all things sustainable.

Sustainability: Building Partners, Building Opportunities

Assistant Professor Sarah Passonneau has worked in curriculum design and developed collaborative teams that included k12 school districts, state colleges and university partners. It is in the area of team building that she has brought her expertise to the issue of sustainability. She will discuss building teams within and without the library. Developing values, action plans and reports will be discussed in her session. It is hoped that participants will learn how to move forward with their sustainable project by receiving practical tips and by learning about the general philosophy behind sustainability.

Campus Sustainability Initiatives and How the Library Fits in

The Library and Campus Sustainability
Presenters:

  • Carl Flynn, Director of Marketing and Communications for Information Technology and University Libraries
  • Smith Getterman, Sustainability Coordinator, Information Technology and University Libraries

Sustainability initiatives are becoming commonplace among colleges and universities. What role might Libraries play in these sustainability efforts? Listen as two representatives describe their campus sustainability initiative and the central role played by the Libraries.

Growing Green Awareness and Setting the Green Standard
Presenter:

Sustainability research projects have been happening in multiple and diverse areas of the University of North Texas for many years, including the design and completion of the Environmental Sciences Building on campus. Batman's work on the university’s efforts began when she was appointed by the Director of Sustainability, Dr. Todd Spinks, to join the committee promoting these efforts. The We Mean Green committee was formed, and asked to establish university wide standards.

She then began recruiting colleagues to join her in the “Mean Green Library Team” who would help her in collecting library employees’ “Top 3 Green Peeves,” and from those lists a compilation would be created which would be prioritized and developed into action items.
